Batton Smith's
work evolved from costume design renderings. A collage technique used to find
brighter colors and unusual design for clothing, masks and puppets developed
into pieces that stood on their own. Her subject matter stems from her own
obsessions, religious icons, heroic mythic figures, showgirls, french brothels
circa 1930, the Weimar Republic, carnivals and various obscure musicians.
